Characters in Disgaea Mayhem

Meet the mercenary, the Overlord, and the demon horde of the Super Duper Netherworld.

Last updated:

Disgaea Mayhem features a small but memorable cast of characters, anchored by the mercenary-for-hire N.A. and the flan-obsessed Overlord Tichelle. Beyond these two protagonists, the game features a wide variety of demon enemies that can be defeated, recruited, and taken along as Battle Buddies for use in combat.

Playable Characters

N.A. (Main Protagonist)

N.A. is the protagonist and the only directly controllable character in Disgaea Mayhem. He is a veteran mercenary who takes jobs primarily for the paycheck, with a secondary motivation tied to his notoriously strong sweet tooth. He is pragmatic, sarcastic, and entirely uninterested in the political machinations of the Netherworld — until Tichelle’s job offer proves too lucrative to refuse.

In combat, N.A. wields all seven weapon types. He cannot be swapped out or customised with different characters, but his loadout can be freely changed between any of the seven weapon classes, each of which dramatically alters his moveset and play style. This makes N.A. a versatile protagonist whose effectiveness is directly tied to the player’s weapon mastery.

As players progress through the game, N.A. can be Reincarnated to improve his long-term base stats. Reincarnation resets his level to 1 but permanently increases the rate at which his attributes grow with each subsequent level-up. Veteran Disgaea players will recognise this as one of the franchise’s core optimisation loops.

Overlord Tichelle

Tichelle is the current Overlord of the Super Duper Netherworld, a vast demonic realm where power is the only currency that matters. She inherits the throne from her now-deceased father, who created the legendary Pristine Gleam Flan before it was eaten by rebellious subjects during a palace coup. Tichelle is driven by an obsessive desire to recover the dessert, and she hires N.A. specifically because no one else in the Netherworld is capable of the job.

Tichelle does not fight alongside N.A. in combat. Her role is primarily narrative — she serves as the quest-giver, hub world guide, and comic relief. However, she appears frequently in story scenes and is a fully voiced character with a distinctive personality that reviewers have praised for capturing the franchise’s irreverent humour.

Recruitable Demon Companions (Battle Buddies)

Defeating enemies in combat occasionally results in a demon choosing to join you after being defeated. These demons become your Battle Buddy — an AI-controlled companion who fights alongside N.A. in every mission. Only one Buddy can be active at a time.

Prinny

The iconic Disgaea mascot, Prinnies are penguin-like demon creatures known for their explosive suicide attacks and catchphrase “Dood!”. They appear frequently among enemy ranks and can be recruited after defeating them in combat. Prinnies are among the easiest demons to recruit early in the game, making them a common first Battle Buddy.

Their usefulness in combat is situational. Prinnies deal significant damage with their self-destructing kamikaze attack, but this destroys the Buddy for that encounter. They are most effectively used as a burst damage option against tough bosses rather than as a sustained combat companion.

Other Demon Types

The game features a broad roster of demon enemy types that can be recruited, ranging from low-level fodder to high-stat Legendaries. Community resources have documented dozens of distinct demon types, each with different stat distributions, skill sets, and Magichange weapon forms.

Early-game recruits tend to have lower base stats but are easier to find and recruit. High-level Legendaries, which appear in the deeper floors of the Item World, offer dramatically superior stat contributions when Magichanged but are significantly harder to recruit.

The Tier List section of this wiki provides community-driven rankings for Battle Buddy effectiveness in both story mode and the Item World.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions from Disgaea Mayhem players.

Can I recruit every demon enemy in the game?

Most standard demon enemy types can be recruited after defeating them in combat. Certain unique bosses and story-critical enemies cannot be recruited. High-tier Legendaries have very low recruitment rates and typically require repeated attempts in the Item World.

How does Magichange work?

Magichange is activated during combat and transforms your active Battle Buddy into your equipped weapon for a limited time. While Magichanged, you receive stat bonuses based on the Buddy's attributes and gain access to unique skill chains associated with that Buddy's type. You can cancel Magichange at any time to return to your normal weapon.

Is there a character other than N.A. I can play as?

No. N.A. is the sole playable character in Disgaea Mayhem. All other characters — including Tichelle and your recruited Battle Buddy — are AI-controlled companions and cannot be directly controlled by the player.

Do demon companions level up independently?

Yes. Your Battle Buddy gains experience and levels up independently of N.A. Their stats also improve when you use them for Magichange. Reincarnating N.A. does not affect your Buddy's level or stats.
