Free Demo Guide
Everything the July 9, 2026 demo includes — and how to use it to test performance on your platform before launch-day purchase.
NIS America released a free demo for Disgaea Mayhem on July 9, 2026, two weeks before the full game’s July 23 launch. The demo remains available on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and Steam, making it the most reliable pre-purchase test for performance, control feel, and weapon preference.
This guide explains exactly what the demo contains, what it does not include, and how to get maximum value from a trial session.
What the Demo Includes
The demo provides access to:
- Three stages selected from a menu, increasing in difficulty
- All seven weapon types — Sword, Spear, Axe, Fist, Bow, Gun, and Staff
- A staging loadout area where you configure equipment before each stage
- Real-time combat identical to the full game’s core loop
- Boss encounters demonstrating dodge-heavy attack patterns
PAX East 2026 hands-on coverage (RPGFan) noted that demo bosses require reading telegraphs and using special moves — a preview of mechanics that become essential in later story chapters and Item World waves.
What the Demo Does Not Include
Demo progress does not carry over to the full game. The demo also excludes:
- Item World diving
- Dark Chocolate Assembly bills
- Reincarnation
- Cheat Shop
- Battle Buddy recruitment and Magichange
- Story chapters beyond the three demo stages
If you enjoy the demo’s combat but want deeper progression, the full game’s value is in systems the demo deliberately omits.
How to Test Each Weapon
Because weapon changes may be restricted mid-stage in the demo build, plan one stage per weapon type across three sessions:
Session 1 — Sword + Gun: Run stage 1 with Sword, restart and run stage 1 with Gun. Compare melee vs ranged crowd control.
Session 2 — Fists + Staff: Fists test combo speed; Staff tests orb-charging rhythm. Staff feels weakest in fast demo stages but strongest in high-difficulty Item World in the full game.
Session 3 — Spear + Bow + Axe: Spear for reach, Bow for precision, Axe to confirm why community tier lists rank it last.
Document which weapon feels best — you will commit to one primary weapon in the first week of the full game.
Platform Performance Testing
Use the demo as a performance benchmark on your intended purchase platform:
| Platform | What to Watch |
|---|---|
| PS5 | Stable 60 fps, fastest loads — baseline reference |
| Switch 2 docked | Performance Mode smoothness on TV |
| Switch 2 handheld | Frame drops during busy waves |
| Switch 1 | Acceptable docked; portable mode weakest |
| Steam (Windows) | Uncapped fps on capable hardware |
| Steam Deck | Ghosting, ~45 fps cap — see Steam Deck guide |
RPG Site’s launch comparison recommends downloading the demo and testing every mode on your hardware before buying — especially for portable play on Switch or Steam Deck.
Demo Difficulty vs Full Game
RPGFan’s PAX demo noted combat felt easier than expected — likely tuned for show-floor accessibility. Do not assume the full story will be equally forgiving. Early Item World access in the retail game allows you to outlevel story content quickly if you choose to grind.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions from Disgaea Mayhem players.
Does demo progress transfer to the full game?
No. Demo saves are separate. You start fresh in the retail release regardless of demo completion.
Can I play the Item World in the demo?
No. Item World, Assembly bills, Reincarnation, and Magichange are full-game systems only. The demo covers combat and weapon variety.
Is the demo still available after launch?
Yes as of late July 2026. NIS America has not announced a demo removal date. It remains useful for performance testing before purchase.
Which platform should I run the demo on?
Run it on the exact hardware you plan to buy the game for. Portable Switch and Steam Deck performance differs significantly from PS5 or docked Switch 2.
