Magichange and Battle Buddy Guide

Recruit demons, transform them into weapons, and unlock the most interesting tactical layer in Disgaea Mayhem's real-time combat.

Last updated:

Disgaea Mayhem’s Magichange system is one of the most tactically interesting additions to the franchise’s combat. Unlike previous Disgaea games where party management was purely strategic, here your recruited demon companion has a direct mechanical impact on your combat capabilities through the Magichange transformation.

This guide explains how to recruit Battle Buddies, how Magichange works in combat, and how to make the most of the system.

Recruiting Battle Buddies

After defeating an enemy in combat, there is a random chance that the demon will choose to join you. This is not guaranteed — recruitment chance varies by demon type and by how the encounter ends. Demon types with higher rarity, better stats, or unique abilities are harder to recruit.

The process is passive. Simply playing through the game and defeating enemies will gradually build your roster of potential Battle Buddies.

You can review your available Buddies from the character menu. Only one Buddy can be active at a time — select the one you want to bring into the next mission before departing.

Battle Buddy Combat Role

During missions, your active Battle Buddy fights alongside N.A. as an AI-controlled companion. The Buddy cannot be directly controlled, but they will automatically engage enemies, use abilities, and provide additional damage output throughout the mission.

Buddy effectiveness scales with their level and stats. Higher-level Buddies with better base stats contribute meaningfully to combat. Low-level common Buddies are primarily useful for the Magichange bonus rather than their independent combat contribution.

How Magichange Works

During combat, you can activate Magichange at any time (subject to cooldown). When activated, your Battle Buddy physically transforms and merges with your equipped weapon, granting:

  1. Stat bonuses — Your base stats receive a temporary boost based on the Buddy’s current stats. Higher-level Buddies provide more significant bonuses.
  2. Unique skill chains — While Magichanged, you gain access to special skill chains unique to that Buddy’s type. These are different from your normal weapon skills and often have different cooldown profiles or effects.
  3. Visual transformation — Your weapon’s appearance changes to reflect the Buddy’s form.

You can cancel Magichange at any time to return to your normal weapon. The Magichange skill has a cooldown, so you cannot maintain the transformation indefinitely.

Choosing the Right Buddy

Different Buddies are better suited to different situations:

  • High-stat Legendaries — For pure damage output during Magichange, the best possible Buddy is a high-level Legendary demon with strong base stats. The Magichange bonus scales with the Buddy’s stats, making raw power the primary selection criterion for end-game builds.
  • Fast low-level demons — In the early and mid game, fast demons with ranged attacks can draw enemy aggro while you deal damage from behind. This is particularly useful in boss fights where enemy attention on the Buddy gives you free attack windows.
  • Prinnies — The franchise mascot provides situational value. Their self-destruct attack deals massive burst damage to groups of enemies, but it destroys the Buddy for that encounter. Use Prinnies as emergency burst tools rather than sustained companions.

Magichange and the Item World

In the Item World, Magichange is particularly valuable because the Buddy’s stat contribution allows you to clear higher floors more reliably. A well-leveled Buddy with high stats effectively functions as a damage multiplier during Magichange, making difficult Item World floors more manageable.

For high-difficulty Item World farming, prioritise Buddies with high Attack and Defense stats. The additional survivability from a high-stat Buddy’s Magichange transformation can be the difference between clearing a floor and dying partway through.

The Tier List provides community rankings for Battle Buddy effectiveness in both story mode and the Item World.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions from Disgaea Mayhem players.

Can I have multiple Battle Buddies?

You can recruit as many Buddies as you encounter, but only one can be active at a time. You can swap your active Buddy from the character menu at any hub world location.

Do Buddy stats improve when I Reincarnate?

No. Buddy stats are entirely independent of N.A.'s Reincarnation cycles. Buddies have their own level progression and do not reset when you Reincarnate. They can also be individually Reincarnated through their own character menu.

What happens if my Buddy dies in combat?

If your Buddy is defeated, they are unavailable for the remainder of the mission but will be automatically restored to the roster afterwards with no penalty. You cannot lose a Buddy permanently through combat defeat.

How long does the Magichange transformation last?

Magichange is limited by a cooldown rather than a duration timer. You can stay Magichanged indefinitely as long as you do not cancel the transformation. The cooldown begins when you cancel or when the mission ends.
